Men versus Women: Your Metabolism at Work

Couples around the world have set out to lose weight together, and many women have become very frustrated as they watch their partners lose weight with minor changes, such as cutting out carbs, while their scale blinks the same numbers week after week.

Don’t worry. You aren’t doing anything wrong.  Men and women are built differently, and the metabolism’s effect on fat retention doesn’t match up.

The bottom line is that what works for men doesn’t necessarily work for women. Let’s take a quick look at the differences.

Fact: Men and women do not have different metabolisms.

While this seems counterintuitive to the results, metabolisms are based on age, muscle mass, and activity level.

Neither men nor women have an advantage when it comes to metabolic rate in general.  Still, even though the metabolic rate can be the same, the gender difference plays a role in what that means for weight loss.

Fact: Women retain more fat than men.

Regardless of metabolism, women are hardwired to retain more fat. Female bodies are designed to give birth and breastfeed, which requires fat storage. 

You can have a high metabolism and still see belly, hip, and breast fat due to this biological phenomenon.

Fact: Men are hardwired to have more muscle.

Genetics and gender are on a man’s side regarding lean muscle mass and lower fat retention.

Since they’re biologically designed for more muscle, the testosterone in their body works double-time.

It lends the metabolism a helping hand, converting fat into energy instead of storing it for pregnancy.

Fact: Muscle mass is linked to the efficiency of metabolism to burn fat.

The more muscle mass you have, the more efficient your metabolism will be. As men tend to have higher muscle mass, they also tend to have metabolisms that result in fat loss.

This is why so many people assume that metabolism is linked to gender.

Fact: Dieting alone isn’t an effective weight-loss method.

Dieting is only part of the equation.  Remember, muscle mass works hand in hand with metabolism, so exercise is required to get your metabolism to work towards weight loss.

As we already know, men have a leg up in this, but don’t let that dissuade you. Exercise daily, and you’ll start seeing a difference.
